Experts call for more investments in agric research facilities

Experts in the agricultural sector have called on the government at all levels to focus on the improvement of research facilities and step up the rate of food production so that food can be affordable.

Experts in the agricultural sector have called on the government at all levels to focus on the improvement of research facilities and step up the rate of food production so that food can be affordable.

They said these at the 18th memorial lecture of the Ikorodu Division Resource Development Group (IDRDG), which was held at the weekend.Speaking at the event, a member of the advisory committee for International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mr Olatunji Adebowale said that a lot of investment is needed for basic researches that will expand the knowledge base of every aspect of agriculture that will enhance agricultural productivity of the country.

“Many of our universities of agriculture and research institutes are poorly funded, understaffed and lack basic research facilities to enable them maximise agricultural production,” he said.

“As a nation, we need a rethink urgently by investing in basic and applied research if we are to meet the security need of the people,” he added.The guest speaker, Prof. Babajide Matanmi, a former commissioner for agriculture and natural resources in Kwara state, also buttressed the need for history preservation, urging Nigerians to hold history in high esteem.
