Angry voters Saturday lamented the delay in identifying voters by the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council elections.

The scenario resulted in some squabbles between election officials and voters in polling unit 018, Central Post Office area in Abuja.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presiding officers attributed the poor performance of the BVAS to network failure.

Accreditation began a little behind schedule in most of the polling units visited across the six council areas monitored by our correspondents.

Voting was supposed to commence officially by 8:30 am but as 10:20 am INEC staff and voters were yet to arrive at many polling units.

At polling unit 011 opposite Customs Hospital at Karu, election officials were seen setting up their tent two hours after voting was supposed to have commenced.

There was also a poor turnout of voters which was attributed to the fuel scarcity that made movement difficult.

Another factor blamed for the voter apathy was the conflicting order of the police on the restriction of movement.

The Police had on Friday lifted the restriction of movement earlier placed only to reinstate the ban later the same day.

It had hinged the decision to reverse its earlier position on restriction of movement to intelligence over security concerns and this, it was gathered may have scared voters to stay away.
