Ex-Rivers guber candidate condemns NLC’s silence over effects of subsidy removal

Tonye Princewill

Former Chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Prince Tonye Princewill, has decried continued silence by Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), despite painful effects of subsidy removal on Nigerians.

Princewill stressed that a lot of Nigerians were going through pain. He said: “Some are dying; I just wonder how people are coping. We need to hear from NLC.”

Recall that after the initial threat by the labour union to embark on strike, after President Bola Tinubu announced removal of subsidy during his inaugural speech on May 29, no remarkable efforts have been made by labour to intervene.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, yesterday, while announcing the tentative burial date of his father, the Amanyanabo of Kalabari Kingdom, King TJT, slated for November 29 and 30, 2023, the former APC chieftain urged the government to carry Nigerians along concerning savings from the subsidy.

“The issue is not just the removal of subsidy; what about the pain on the people? Removal of subsidy fraud is important, but there is a need to put measures in place to cushion its effects on the people,” Princewill said.

He described politics in the state as murky.

He disclosed that some members of APC in the state are also members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the national level, while some PDP members in the state are members of APC at the national level.

“Politics in the state is discoloured, but I look forward to seeing major realignments in the state’s political space,” he added.
