Enyimba begins search for new coach, wants Finidi to complete season

NPFL defending champions, Enyimba of Aba

Nigerian champions, Enyimba, are bracing up for life without their head coach, Finidi George, who was recently employed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as Super Eagles coach.

George led Enyimba to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) title last season and is currently fighting to retain the title this term.

Enyimba is second on the NPFL table behind leaders, Enugu Rangers, who have 57 to the Peoples Elephants 55 points.

An Enyimba source told The Guardian at the weekend that the club is currently negotiating with the NFF on the terms of George’s release to the national team, saying that the club wants the 1995 UEFA Champions League winner to see out the 2023/24 before departing for Eagles.

He said: “Finidi’s engagement by the NFF did not come to us by surprise, but what surprised us is that the federation waited until everybody knew of the development before contacting us.

“We will not stop Finidi from furthering his career, but we want a fair deal from our own end.

“I am sure our chairman (Kanu Nwankwo) and the management will reach a reasonable settlement with the NFF,” the source, who pleaded anonymity, said.

He revealed that Enyimba has already narrowed down the possible candidates to take over from Finidi, adding that the chosen coach would be made public in due course.
