The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has approved the construction of a 12MMSCFD capacity Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) extraction plant in Rivers State.

The plant, owned by Green Energy International Limited, operator of the Otakikpo Marginal Field in OML 11, would be located at Ikuru town.

According to a statement in Abuja, yesterday, Green Energy said approval to construct the plant was issued following successful submission of Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of the plant, while Licence To Establish (LTE) was issued in last year.

The decision followed commitment by the federal government to focus on gas to create a balance to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and create a greener environment.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, had emphasised the need for the country to move away from over-dependence on petrol and prioritise greener sources of energy.

Director of Legal and Corporate services, Green Energy International Limited, Olusegun Ilori, stated that the gas utilisation plant involves the use of lean gas to power the 12MW gas generator at Otakikpo Field.

He said 5MW would be dedicated to the host communities, in line with its pact with government, while the LPG and propane would be bottled and sold.
