Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has threatened a N25 billion suit against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for alleged defamation of character.

A letter by his legal team dated February 19, 2024 said the move is in reaction to a widely circulated statement made by Akpabio in a video displayed by Channels Television last weekend which, according to Emefiele, was false, distorted and aimed at denigrating his image.

The correspondence was received by the office of the Senate President on February 20.  The erstwhile governor of Akwa Ibom State had recently said the charges against Emefiele were numerous to the extent that the government does not know which to try him on.  He had also blamed the CBN ex-boss for some of the problems the country currently faces.

In the memo, Emefiele said Akpabio had, in his statement, suggested that “the cause of the entire hardship in Nigeria today is as a result of the policies of the previous administration.”

The communication also said it portrayed Emefiele as “a serial offender, whose action is responsible for all the hardship experienced by Nigerians today.”
