Drainage worker trapped in underground tunnel recovered after five days

Rescue authorities recovering the body of the drainage worker trapped inside underground tunnel

The body of a trapped drainage worker, Tajudeen Amololo, has been recovered by
rescue authorities in Lagos State after a five-day search.

This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

Amololo, 59, was trapped in an underground tunnel at the Onipanu Bus Stop around Fadeyi in Lagos while desilting the drainage.


Rescue agencies launched a search and rescue operation since then and eventually found his body after five days.

“After five days of painstaking, tedious, and energy-sapping operation, the team remained determined on focused on the rescue operation,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

“At about 5:53 pm on Friday 10th May 2024 the victim was recovered dead from the underground drainage/tunnel.


“The recovered body was immediately bagged by the Agency’s officials and handed over to LAMATA Drain Ducks.”

Following the incident, LASEMA recommended that adequate safety measures should be entrenched in the operations of the drain ducks.
