Don laments poor education standard, UTME mass failure

UTME: JAMB result

A university teacher, Prof. Funso Odesola, has lamented the nation’s deplorable education system and the poor performance of candidates in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Odesola, who stated this during his induction into the Nigerian Books of Record (Who’s Who in Nigeria) by the Director-General, Prof. David David and his team at the Continental Headquarters, The Redeemed Christian Church of God Dominion Cathedral, Gowon Estate, Lagos, lamented that the education curriculum is obsolete and in need of urgent redesigning.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had disclosed that of the 1.9 million candidates that sat this year’s UTME, about 1,402,490 candidates scored below 200.

According to him, the current curriculum is no longer in tandem with global dynamism and needs to be reviewed to fit into current reality. He said: “I have done several studies outside Nigeria and presently doing one in Europe, and discovered that their system of education is such that accommodates powerful research metamorphosing to powerful inventions.”

Odesola, who is also an Assistant General Overseer at the Redeemed Christian Church of God decried the emphasis on certificates in Nigeria, which many cannot defend.

In his remarks, David said the organisation decided to honour Odesola and induct him into the official Book of Record of Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to humanity, divinity, and ministry.

He said Odesola’s attainment of five doctorate degrees in five different courses, as well as his professorial attainment, will encourage students to know that there is no limit to their aspirations.
