Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said Nigeria’s major problem is the character issue, reason religious organisations and families should bring up their children in the way of the Lord.

Diri disclosed this at the ongoing Mgbidi 2024 Lagos Experience, titled, “What God has determined shall be done,” which ends today at the Chosen Revival ground, Ijesha, Lagos.

The governor tasked religious organisations and families on training their children in God’s way so that they will not be tempted to engage in negative activities like kidnapping and become a problem to the society.

Diri said: “How are you bringing up your children so that they will not be tempted by money to do negative things. How are Nigerians bringing up their children and how is the church also impacting on their members because these are the basic two institutions where children grow up.”

He noted that the moment families and religious organisations are able to get it right, the society would be better.

The governor also urged the operators of the country’s electoral system to be upright. According to Diri, the country is blessed with good laws governing the electoral process, but the laws are not obeyed.

He said: “People break it with impunity because of the positions they found themselves or who they are or the kind of resources they have or feel they can buy over the party or the legal system.”

Calling on Christians to go into politics, the governor said: “The problem is not actually with the laws, but the character of the people who are engaged in politics and that is why my clarion call is for Christians to come into politics.”

He said apart from the power of God, the next on earth is the power of government, reason Christians should not avoid politics.
