Residents of Onicha-Ugbo community in Aniocha North Local Council of Delta State have lamented the dilapidated state of the only major road that leads to the village from the local council headquarters in Issele-Uku.
The agrarian community therefore called on Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Chairman of Niger Delta Development Corporation (NDDC) board, Mr Chiedu Ebie, for urgent intervention.
The bad spot, opposite Gbonoza Primary School, Onicha-Ugbo, has remained unfixed for over two years, leading to almost total dilapidation, making it impassable for vehicles, motorcycles and trucks.
The Guardian learnt that the local council authorities did nothing to salvage the situation at the early stage of the deterioration.
One of the residents of the town, Ohia Emmanuel Chukwunweike, said: “The road in question is the major connecting stretch between Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku. As it is, our parents may find it difficult to go to their farms and the Issele Uku market.
“We are calling on the NDDC, Delta State government, and all stake holders to urgently reconstruct the road with a proper drainage system; let our people feel the dividend of democracy.”
Another resident and grassroots politician, Francis Osedume, said: “It is disheartening that both students and local farmers cannot access their schools and farms due to the unfortunate nature of this road.”
Another daughter of the town, Joyce Iwelumo, said: “I’m pleading that our political representatives and the government of our dear state should come to our aid and fix the road connecting Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku.”
Sunday Adikwanfu, also a resident, hinted that the spot had become an eyesore and needed urgent attention.
