A Federal High Court in Abuja has declined granting bail to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, and two other senior police officers facing trial for drug-related charges.
Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling on Wednesday, said the defendants did not bring any evidence to court to warrant the court’s discretion.
Nwite held that the court must exercise its discretion judiciously and in this case, it cannot grant bail to the defendants.
The ruling comes about three weeks after Kyari was granted temporary bail to the tune of N50 million and a surety in like sum to enable him attend to his late mother’s burial rites.
The bail was for two weeks on passionate grounds.
Kyari alongside four others were arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over their alleged involvement in a case of illicit drug trafficking.
Kyari’s arrest comes after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) declared him wanted over alleged links with an international drug cartel.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the anti-drug agency decided to declare Kyari wanted because he did not honour the invitation sent to him.
