Chaotic scenes at inspection centres for road worthiness re-certification

Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS)
There were chaotic scenes yesterday at various vehicle inspection centres in Lagos as motorists were seen lamenting the long queues they are forced to experience.

In line with the procedure for ascertaining the Road Worthiness of Vehicles in Lagos State, the government Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) commenced operations of Computerised Vehicle inspection Centres across the state, which has seen many vehicles parked outside centres visited.

When The Guardian visited three centres yesterday, namely; PWD yard, Bolade Oshodi and Anthony, it was observed that they were hundreds of vehicles awaiting inspection.

The inspection, which ought to take less than 15 minutes, has technicians allotting tally numbers to motorists for inspection who are on queue.

At the PWD yard, motorists waited endlessly for their vehicles to be inspected as some vehicles were parked outside the compound due to limited parking space inside the centre. The PWD yard was also jam-packed with queues but orderly.

A motorist who came for inspection, Alabi, said, he had been at the centre since 8 a.m. only to be diagnosed with hand brake failure at 1:15 pm. The pressure is much on motorists while the turnaround time for each inspection is too long.

At Bolade Oshodi centre, just like PWD yard, the centre is congested with long queues. Motorists who arrived in the morning were attended to by 1:40 pm. Although the Oshodi centre appeared more spacious with two inspection spots, vehicles were seen parked inside the compound for inspection.

Another motorist, Paul said: “I have been here since morning, hoping to get inspected. I think the operators need to provide more facility to check the huge number of vehicles being parked at each centre.”

At Anthony centre, vehicles were seen parked outside the centre as it appeared small, that it could not contain 10 vehicles.

Vehicles parked were being monitored by motorists themselves as there was no security.
