Sterling Bank renews commitment to environmental sustainability

Sterling Bank Plc, has renewed its commitment to environmental sustainability as Nigeria joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2017 edition of the Earth Week.

The Bank in a statement signed by its Chief Marketing Officer, Henry Bassey assured that the financial institution would continue to invest in initiatives to promote sustainable environment and partner with various government and private institutions to provide a clean and healthy environment in the country.

The statement reads in part: ‘’We will continue to support initiatives to ensure that our environment is continually suitable for human habitation. We will put in more investment into our Sterling Environmental Makeover (STEM), where staff of the Bank on a quarterly basis volunteer their time and resources to clean the streets of the country as part of its “Sterling Environmental Makeover” (#STEM) series. The exercise which is part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of the Bank focuses on environmental sustainability and aims at promoting a clean environment and good health among Nigerians’’.

The Bank’s Chief Marketing Officer said the Bank will also extend the provision of street sweepers uniforms to highway managers to other states not currently covered by the Bank for the protection of highway managers and sweepers.

He said further: ‘’Sterling Bank in 2011, joined the campaign for a cleaner environment, especially in Lagos, as it went into partnership with Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Under the partnership, the Bank makes available 25,000 units of Uniforms for cleaners and other highway managers in the state. Since then, the Bank has consistently provided LAWMA with these uniforms on a yearly basis. Other agencies that have benefited from this partnership include KIA Brigades and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) operators. We have since extended this partnership to 14 other states of the federation with a view to partner with all state governments in Nigeria.”

He added that the tree planting exercise embarked upon by the Bank last year with a mandate to plant one million trees by the year 2018 in support of the Federal Government’s plan to sustain the environment will stem desertification adding that three states; Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe have benefitted from the exercise.

“We believe a sustainable environment is the foundation for any progressive socio-economy and have chosen to prioritize and will remain committed to protecting and preserving the environment,” he stressed.
