NUATE advocates better welfare for air workers

THE National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has urged the Minister of state for aviation Capt Hadi Sirika to ensure that aviation workers are given better treatment.

In an interview with The Guardian NUATEs Acting General Secretary,Mr Olayinka Abioye noted that the aviation industry could be better than what it is now. According to him, “workers’ welfare is very paramount. Every disgruntled worker in the aviation industry is an accident waiting to happen.

“We have situations whereby workers are aging and there is no replacement of this aging work-force especially in NAMA and FAAN. Also some staff that had retired in the last three years are being owed their benefits and this is bringing anxiety to those that are still in service.

“They would think that if those that have retired are being treated this way, then what becomes their fate after retirement. I also want the mister to convene a meeting with heads of parastatals on how the money would be paid.

Expressing optimism that the minister would perform, he however noted that some infrastructure at the airport had decayed while some were obsolete. He urged the minister to ensure that the facilities are in order.
