The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has stated that not much would be achieved in terms of nation building except Nigeria fixes its political system, especially in the area of transparency and accountability.

The president, LCCI, Babatunde Ruwase, said leaders must be held accountable to pledges of developments to their constituencies and the nation, saying that for leadership to succeed in nation building, leaders must be willing to become agents of change and learn to accept reality that the Nigerian population have evolved rapidly adapting with global realities.

Ruwase who was the guest speaker at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) induction ceremony, said citizens must become objective and analyse performances of their leaders in carrying out their duties.

The LCCI boss added that as Nigeria makes its way to diversify its economy and create an enabling environment, it is imperative for nation building to expand and not focus solely on making the country economically and politically viable, but also create a unified system that is resilient.

According to him, for any effective nation building development to take place and be impactful, there is a need to identify the role of strategic communication in nation building, pointing out that communication is a critical bond that brings a nation together yet respects the multiplicity of perspectives that is relevant to the search for development.

‘‘As many African economies including Nigeria started to record dwindling government revenue, drop in global crude oil prices, worsening poverty levels, high level of unemployment, communal clashes across the states, attacks by herdsmen on farmers, it has become imperative for us as a country to redress the ideologies beneath nation building and seek viable options to bring back peace to our land.

‘‘Nation building remains the only viable option if we as a country are considering forging ahead to emerge as a global giant. There is need for pragmatic and dynamic efforts at reviving our economy through a more viable communication triangle among all relevant stakeholders”, he said.

Earlier, the president, NIPR, Rotimi Oladele, stated that leaders must build a very robust relationship that will be mutually beneficial to followers, saying that followership is the source of power to deliver on leadership mandates.‘‘A leader must groom himself out of communication to be convincing, to be clearer and also ensure that only the truth that can make confidence imposed on him is bestowed to the followers,’’ he added. He however charged the inductees to improve and promote the brand Nigeria while also learn how to tell their positive stories about Nigeria.
