Anishere elected WIMAFRICA vice president

THE President of Women International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA Nigeria), Mrs Jean Chiazor Anishere has been elected 1st Vice President of Women in Maritime in Africa (WIMAFRICA). Anishere was elected at the just concluded activities marking the Africa Union celebration of Africa’s Ocean and Seas in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

THE President of Women International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA Nigeria), Mrs Jean Chiazor Anishere has been elected 1st Vice President of Women in Maritime in Africa (WIMAFRICA). Anishere was elected at the just concluded activities marking the Africa Union celebration of Africa’s Ocean and Seas in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

WISTA Nigeria has continued to make tremendous progress in the last one year, ‘her reputation which has already been acknowledged continentally has blossomed’.

WISTA Nigeria has been instrumental in the formation of the organization called “Women in Maritime in Africa”[ WIMAFRICA] under the auspices of the African Union Commission’s Chairperson , Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma”.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Hassan Bello has solicited more empowerment for women in the maritime industry.

Represented by Deputy Director, Mrs Ada Okam, Bello made the appeal made the plea in a message to a unveiling of WISTA Membership Directory and Quarterly Journal in Lagos. Bello said people acquired and possessed power and resources to enhance their decision-making abilities and skills.

He said “Going down its lane of achievements, WISTA Nigeria has been on the front-line of promoting several policies, programmes and projects designed by the Federal Government of Nigeria for the empowerment of women. “The importance of women empowerment cannot be over emphasised.

If women are healthy and educated, their families will flourish. “If women have the chance to work and earn as equal partners in the society, the family will blossom.

When families blossom, communication and nations will prosper,’’ Bello said. He explained that empowerment of women prepared them for personal wealth; skills, education, information, knowledge, social status as well as giving them equal rights and opportunities.

Managing Director, Comet Shipping Agencies Nigeria Limited and Comet Group, PierLuigi Carrodano, made a presentation titled: `The Rising Profile of Women in International Shipping: The Nigerian Perspective’’.

Carrodano explained that the rising profile of women in international shipping and maritime trade had been facilitated by various social, economic and political factors.

Carrodano said: “It has been noted that the industry has lost much of its physical attributes in favour of computerisation. “All these developments have accelerated the rise in the profile of women’s participation in many aspects of international shipping and maritime trade”, Carrodano added.

Also speaking, according to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Executive Director of Starzs Investments Company Limited, Mrs Iroghana Obuoforibo said she was passionate about the present opportunities for female cadets in the maritime industry.

Obuoforibo said her institution had produced four female graduate cadets, saying that she would not relent in continuing to encourage females to join men in tapping the potential in the maritime industry.

She however urged women already in the industry to put more efforts in encouraging young females to show interest in shipping profession. “If women in maritime industry motivate the incoming ones, their names would forever be remembered in the industry and incoming generation will read their history,’’ Obuoforibo added.
