Manufacturer canvasses local content in aviation wear, uniforms

Nigeria’s minister of aviation Hadi Sirika and his information and culture counterpart, Lai Mohammed, inspect the reconstruction of Abuja Airport runway on Thursday, March 30, 2017 in an aviation wear.

Worried by the continuous reliance on foreign market for goods that are readily available locally, a manufacturer has canvassed for local content in uniforms and wear used in various sectors, especially the air travel sector of the economy.

The Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Young Global Investments Limited, Daniel Young, said besides reducing the pressure on foreign exchange, patronage of local industries and market will save cost, and also enhance the economy with jobs creation for the unemployed.

Young, at the opening of a new uniforms and wear factory in Ikeja, Lagos, said the aviation industry is important to showcase the available local standard in terms of uniforms, as the first port of call for most people entering into Nigeria.

The manufacturer of uniforms, shoes, and bags for both international and local markets, said the edge is that the needed materials are sourced locally, and made in Nigeria, to compete with those imported into the country.

He said: “Everything you need in terms of fabrics can be found in Lagos or Aba. We have a lot of textile mills here. All I need to do is to go towards Oshodi, tell them exactly what I need, and they will produce. Everything here can be found in Nigeria, so you do not have any limitation accessing raw materials for the best quality.”

Unfortunately, he added, airline operators in Nigeria are not patronising indigenous companies, despite superior qualities and cheaper cost available locally.

Young continue, “All the cloths in my showroom are made here. They beat the standard in every way. We have a range of products that are unique. If you bring cloths from the United States to me, all I need to do is to remove it and take the pattern. If I ask you to differentiate between the one you brought from the one I made, you won’t be able to.

“Most of the airlines don’t patronise indigenous companies. You cannot be bringing products that are made here outside the country.”
