Worried about a possible increment in electricity tariff amidst rising operational costs and power shortages, Cummins and Power Gas has rallied local manufacturers on the adoption of its compressed natural gas solution.

Speaking during an event to host leading Nigerian manufacturing industry leaders at the U.S. Consul General’s residence in Lagos, General Manager of Cummins Power Generation Nigeria, Daniele Sechi, detailed the benefits of dedicated power plants that are installed, owned and operated by Cummins, which effectively allows customers to “fix their cost of power” over a long period of time.

According to a statement from the company, Sechi said the supply and quality of electricity through Cummins Gas Generators is highly robust and reliable, adding that Cummins Energy Solutions Nigeria provides the operation, maintenance and after-market support for all Cummins Gas Plants in Nigeria.

It would be recalled that the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is hoping to increase the number of its members on its Independent Power Project (IPP) scheme by using the Manufacturers Power Development Company (MPDC) as a vehicle to achieve the gradual transition from dependence on distribution companies for electricity to the scheme.

Operators noted that Distribution Companies of Nigeria (DISCos) hope to increase the cost of electricity in the near future, considering that power already accounts for almost 30-40 per cent of the cost of production.

Sechi added that in certain cases the tariff, Naira per unit (N/kWh), offered by Cummins is highly competitive to the tariff end users currently pay to the Distribution Companies for their electricity bills, noting that the firm’s customers are guaranteed high quality, uninterrupted power 24/7.

The Power Gas team, led by its Managing Director, Pulak Sen, while addressing the issue of availability of gas and the current limitations of the gas infrastructure, said Power Gas has its compression plants at key strategic locations where they compress the piped natural gas and transport it in bulk quantities to power plants across the country.“Not only is the cost of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) lower than Diesel but CNG is also much more environmental friendly”, he added.
