ABOUT 13 years after its creation, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu's Aninri Local Council of Enugu State went agog on Wednesday as its first electricity project was commissioned. It was indeed a delight to watch as children, young boys and girls, men, women and elderly leapt in frenzy and joyous celebrations as Ekweremadu, who facilitated the project, turned the hobs to switch on the lights, thus ending the nightmarish of the council. The N490 million project awarded by the Federal Government under the Rural Electrification Scheme was almost abandoned following the scrapping of the agency but for Ekweremadu, who hails from the council, that gave the contractor necessary encouragement which ensured the completion of the project.

Commissioning the project amidst jubilation by people of the benefiting communities including Ndeabor, Okpanku and Mpu, the Deputy Senate President said that the present administration was determined to bridge the gap between rural communities and urban areas through the provision of basic necessities like water, roads, electricity and security.

He expressed happiness that Aninri, which had been without electricity since it was created in 1996, now had the single largest rural electrification project in the country, adding that two other communities in the council including Oduma and Nenwe would also benefit from the project before April next year.

“The present administration believes that every Nigerian is entitled to basic necessities of life like good drinking water, roads and electricity and that is the essence of government. We are committed to ensure that the people of Enugu West Senatorial zone enjoy these infrastructures under this regime,” he said.

Ekweremadu also said that the Federal Government had also awarded contract for the construction of Oji River-Awgu-Ndeabor-Akaeze road in addition to the construction of a dam to serve the farming needs of the people of Aninri, as well as generate electricity for the people of the council and parts of Ebonyi State.

The Deputy Senate President, who had earlier commissioned five 300KVA electricity transformers procured by the Aninri Local Government Area, commended the council Chairman, Matthias Ekweremadu, for his commitment towards the development of the council.

He said that the transformers and others procured earlier would enhance power supply to all the communities that have already been linked and solicited the support of the people of the senatorial zone to the Federal Government.
