RMD thrills at Alibaba January 1st Concert

Some years ago, when comedian Alibaba muted the idea of hosting a live show on New Year day in Lagos tagged Alibaba January 1st Concert, it wasn’t clear if the idea would fly.

Some years ago, when comedian Alibaba muted the idea of hosting a live show on New Year day in Lagos tagged Alibaba January 1st Concert, it wasn’t clear if the idea would fly. But few years down the line, the show has become a major part of the country’s events calendar, with dignitaries and celebrities always in attendance.

This year, Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo took on a new facet to his career as one effortlessly hilarious comedian at Alibaba’s January 1st Concert, which held on January 1, 2017 at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
 
The actor, who has been a long-time friend of the veteran comedian Alibaba, took center stage as he cracked series of jokes; sending the mammoth audience into gales of unending laughter.

 
RMD as he is otherwise called quipped about an array topics, including being forced to don a black tuxedo and bow tie by Alibaba; causing him to undress in front of an enthralled audience while he lamented, “Who suit help?”
 
Left in a black tee and pants, the veteran actor ordered to be brought a waistcoat as he continued to crack his jokes; further causing the audience to bellow and cheer merrily.
 
Among other attendees were former First Lady of Lagos State Abimbola Fashola; Patrick Doyle; Mercy Aigbe; Faithia Balogun; Iyabo Ojo; Yaw and others.The night also witnessed performances from some of the industry’s finest comedians and musicians, including Seyi Law, Bash, AY, Akpororo, Olamide, CDQ, Patoranking, Waje, Timaya, Tiwa Savage, Niyola and several others.

During a segment of the concert tagged “A Stitch in time contest” Alibaba called on stage; a few fashion designers from the audience, who will compete to win a brand new sewing machine worth N100, 000 and N300, 000 reward. Given three hours to sew and complete their designs from scratch; the selected few went on to pick volunteers from the audience so as to model for them.

After three hours, the designers ascended the stage with their models respectively and the mammoth audience and judges, which included Uche Nnaji and Mai Atafo, decided the winner. The winner went home with a brand new mechanical sewing machine and N300, 000 reward. The first and second runner up however, were also gifted N200, 000 by an individual from the audience and another N100, 000 from another impressed personality from the audience.

Alibaba went on to emphasize on the need for Nigerian youths to dabble into an array of crafts as skill acquisition is one of the keys to stay afloat, especially in these trying times.
