Issues of national rebirth dominate historical society’s conference

The 61st annual conference of Historical Society of Nigeria is scheduled to hold at the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, from October 9 through 13, 2016.

The 61st annual conference of Historical Society of Nigeria is scheduled to hold at the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, from October 9 through 13, 2016. The Conference, being co-hosted by the University of Port-Harcourt and the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, is expected to attract scholars and experts in the field of history, historiography, culture, the media and fields relevant to the study and application of historical facts and values at home and abroad.

According to a statement from the Local Organising Committee, the theme of the conference is ‘Nigeria Counts: Issues of National Rebirth’. Sub-themes that will receive the attention of scholars and participants include: ‘Decolonization in Nigeria since Independence’; Fifty Years after the First Military Coup in Nigeria: Legacies and Lessons’; ‘Fame and Infamy: Heroes, Heroines in Nigerian History’; Leisure, Sports and Entertainment in Nigerian History’ and ‘Nigerian Petroleum Industry in Historical Perspectives’ among others.

The opening ceremony, which holds at the Ebitimi Banigo Hall, University of Port Harcourt, will be chaired by Professor Godwin O.M. Tassie, Fellow, Nigerian Academy of Letters while Professor Sola Akinrinade, Provost, The Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, will give the keynote address. Royal Father of the Day is King Dandison Douglas Jaja, JP, Jeki V, the Amanyanbo of Opobo and Chairman, Rivers State Council of Chiefs. UNESCO’s Regional Director in Nigeria is also expected to deliver a special address at the opening.

The Local Organising Committee stressed that the necessity of evolving a new Nigeria by stimulating a rebirth of national values and validation of aspirations for a greater country informed the theme of the Conference.
