Foundation lists gains of promoting Nigeria’s culture sector

A notable corporate player and telecom giant, MTN, through its MTN Foundation, has hailed its collaboration with a culture production company, Bolanle Austin-Peters Production (BAP), on the elevation of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through a theatre piece, Wakaa! The Musical, which was staged recently in London and Abuja. Following its successful run in London, United Kingdom, the organisers re-enacted the performance with a command performance in Abuja to mark Independence Day celebration.

The foundation’s Executive Secretary, Nonny Ugboma, said, “Wakaa! The Musical! is a world-class theatrical masterpiece that showcases our culture and artistry, while providing thought-provoking insights into the Nigerian psyche.

“Our commitment to advancing theatre and performing arts in Nigeria is well established. We are gratified to also see gifted graduates of the MTNF-MUSON music scholars’ programme be a part of this renowned showpiece, where they are applying skills honed during the project.”

On the renaissance in the theatre industry, the Executive Producer of BAP noted, “It has been an incredible journey. The warm reception we have received at home and abroad has left us even more confident that there is no better time than now to tell Nigeria’s positive stories and tales that celebrate our beautiful people, the intricacy of our culture and our many amazing adventures.”

She continued: “Wakaa! The Musical is a play about trial, success and experiences of six young graduates with varied backgrounds, a wager that takes a twist when the realities of life and follies of their choices hit them. Eventually they reunited, coming full circle.”

The story reveals the struggles and challenges young people face in present-day Nigeria and abroad. The showpiece takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that satirises Nigerian political landscape.
