After a successful staging of Story of My Vagina, broadcaster, writer and feminist, Joy Isi Bewaji’s new, award-winning play, Wedding Blues, is set to hit the stage at Freedom Park, Lagos, on March 5. It parades an amazing cast of thespians ranging from Damilola Adegb ite Attoh, Bola Haastrup, Osas Ighodaro Ajibade, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Paul Morgan to Patrick Diabuah, who will give visual interpretation to the play on stage.

Increasingly, Bewaji is finding the stage a new platform to appropriate for her feminist, inclusive ideas for the wholesome transformation and development of society. Story of My Vagina exposes and questions the stereotypes women are subjected in a society that tends towards patriarchy.

Wedding Blues is a contemporary social satire set in Lagos. Utilising limited set, it conveys an authentic message that questions the social prejudices influencing marriages and dictating gender roles with draconian expertise.

It is the story of a young and upwardly-mobile Lagos lady trapped in a world that desperately tries to manipulate her happiness and choices as a woman. She probes cultural, social and religious set rules that have shaped many marriages to a pretend art form. There seems to be no room for escape as, she is overwhelmed by a barrage of unwelcome persuasion from family to become the wife she has no clue how to be.

According to the playwright, “Wedding Blues confronts social stereotypes and individual certitude. It is an almost comic tale of the exaggerations of ‘African marriages,’ where the women are expected to make as many sacrifices of self to keep a man happy. The protagonist confronts her social shortcomings as a woman, who embraces new thinking in a society only interested in the ability for a wife to surrender.”
