As the increasing complexity of modern life makes it difficult for many to cope, some thinkers and writers are offering timely help through their intellectual power in harnessing everyday experiences and time-tested injunctions. Abimbola Lydia Ojo is one such writer, who has dug deep to offer useful tips on how to navigate the many challenging phases of life.

Launched in Lagos last week, Ojo’s first book, Ponder on these Things: A Fusion of Scriptures and Life’s Experiences, expertly combines everyday experiences and biblical texts to point the way out of life’s many complex situations for readers. Ojo said she had the habit of pondering on her own life’s experiences and the possible lessons she gleans from it as inspiration for the book.

“I began putting these thoughts together in 2016,” she told her guests. “The book is about life’s experiences and lessons learnt from it and how we need to depend on God’s word, which is the life manual given by God to help us navigate this world. In it I want to buttress the fact that the word of God is relevant today to help us navigate life. Through the efficacy of God’s word, man can achieve a lot in spite of difficulties. My book is unique in talking about life’s experiences and drawing lessons from them and relating them to the bible.”

She admitted that the experiences she relates in Ponder on these Things: A Fusion of Scriptures and Life’s Experiences are a fusion of personal ones and stories she heard from other people, which she has distilled into a book.

Chairman of the event, Mr. Ayo Kolawole, commended the author for writing the book and bequeathing something wholesome to her generation. He said Ponder on these Things: A Fusion of Scriptures and Life’s Experiences combines the author’s experiences with her Christian beliefs, adding, “She has dug deep into her experiences.”

Kolawole also commended the author’s parents for having children who are writers and thinkers. Ojo’s sibling, Abisola Biya, launched her own book, Life’s Lessons: My Path to Happiness, last month. Kolawole attributes this to the Biyas’ sense of parenthood in bringing up dutiful children who are doing their best to help humanity.

“This means that these parents have put something in their children to impact on this generation,” Kolawole said. “These children grew up learning the right virtues from their parents. What this tells us is that we as parents should be mindful of what we impact on our children. What values are we impacting on our children? Is it the one of stealing millions from the national coffers? Or stealing the Mace?”

Reviewer of the book was Grace Otinwa, a professor of exercise physiotherapy, Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, University of Lagos. She said divine inspiration ministration delivered by a man of God became the seed for Ojo’s book. She also praised the author, saying, “for her to put her thoughts together is an eventful thing despite the daunting task of raising children and working.”

Otinwa brought out some memorable quotes from the book such as ‘Your welfare is warfare: pray some more’ and ‘Failure can be an end or a bend of your journey.’Although she said Ojo’s “lessons are most impactful, backed up by scriptural teachings” she literally gives the book away and leaves very little for the imagination of those in the audience. She went beyond wetting the appetite of guests for more to actually being an appetite spoiler, certainly the nice way to review a book!
