Senate urges ITF to de-list unqualified candidates from SIWES scheme
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries, Sam Ominyi Egwu has directed the management of the Industrial Training Fund [ITF] to verify and dismiss unqualified candidates for the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)
It was gathered that most of the students who enrolled for the SIWES over the years have no business coming into the scheme and as such the ITF and the collaborating agencies should ensure that the scheme was limited to only students who are studying courses that require training’
SIWES, which was established in 1973 by the ITF, is one of government’s cardinal programmes meant to empower undergraduates from Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education with the requisite knowledge in their various disciplines that would guarantee them standards and jobs in the labour market.
Egwu gave the directive n his message to the Stakeholders’ Meeting on Expanded Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme [SIWES] in Abuja and tasked the ITF to reduce their overhead cost in running the scheme.
