THE National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has trained 29,684 artisans and technicians under its ICT based Technical and Vocational Skills Training Initiative in Abia State.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, who disclosed this in Abia state recently while commissioning the NDE ICT Skills Acquisition Centre at Osieke in Ugwunagbo LGA, added that there are presently 74 functional NDE Skills Acquisition Centers (SAC) in the country.

He also hinted that another 9,027 persons are currently undergoing vocational skills training in other training outlets in the informal sector under the master craftsmen and women.

He said that aside the new commissioned Center, there are three others in Abia state while since its inception in the state, 12,625 persons have received training in10 different vocational skills even as the NDE was being strengthened to make it more effective in the fight against unemployment.

He said: “The principal objective of the noble idea is to depart from the traditional apprenticeship method which NDE started its skills acquisition programme with in 1987.”

Meanwhile, in its bid to ensure the success of the Education for Employment Programme (E4E), Abia state government is widening its drive to the education, agriculture and industrial sector stakeholders with a view to involving them in the execution and implementation stages.

E4E is designed to train youths in skills that would prepare them for employment either in industries or self-employment.

The E4E Consultant/Coordinator, Endi Ezengwa, said the skills in which the youths will be trained would be determined by the manpower needs of the factories and the private establishments.

Ezengwa, who is also the Chief Executive of Kiara College United Kingdom, disclosed that the data (manpower needs) has been collected and collated.

Already the state Ministry of Education had organized a meeting of Managers of state tertiary education institutions in the state with the Programme Consultant/Coordination to clarify the role they will play and the modalities discussed.

Penultimate week, the drive was taken to Aba, the commercial and industrial hub of the state where members of the state private sector met with government and the E4E Consultant.

Addressing the meeting, the state deputy governor Ude Oko Chukwu, who represented governor Okezie Ikpeazu urged the participants to strike workable partnership stressing government’s to work with them.

He said that government alone does not the capacity to drive the economy hence all hands should be on deck such that the private sector would employ graduates of the E4E programme thus helping to ease unemployment.
