The Labour Party (LP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to solidify the election of its new National Chairman, Dr. Mike Omotosho, by issuing him a letter of recognition.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ebere Ifendu, who spoke to The Guardian in Ilorin thanked INEC for witnessing the peaceful conduct of the election that produced Omotosho and for sanctioning it as a free and fair process.

He, however, urged the electoral body to promptly give Omotosho a letter of recognition to enable the party prepare for the 2019 general elections.

“INEC’s presence was highly appreciated during our October 3, 2017 Convention in Abuja. The INEC next day recognised Omotosho as the new Chairman of our party but it has not given him an official letter to that effect. We pray INEC to speed up the process,” he said.

Ifendu said the emergence of Omotosho would signal a new dawn in the history of the party and urged all members to support him and disregard the speculations of existence of a faction within the party.

According to him, “considering the daily calls from supporters across the country and our friends in the media on the state of our party, the need to set the records straight becomes an issue of public importance.

“Allegations of fraud, embezzlement and anti-party activities were levelled against the former chairman. Consequently, the National Working Committee (NWC) met to review the allegations and a disciplinary committee was set up to give fair hearing to all sides,” he explained.

He added that the Chairman allegedly refused to appear before the committee whereas the letter to him stated that failure to appear would attract consequences such as suspension from the party and removal from office.

He said that the NWC later met to ratify the report of the disciplinary committee where it was agreed that the case of fraud and embezzlement of over N1.3 billion party fund by the ex- chairman be reported to the appropriate security agencies.

However, the former chairman objected to it but agreed that a national convention of the party be convened, where Omotosho emerged as Chairman on October 3, 2017.
