Founder, Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO), Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe has decried obnoxious social norms, political exclusion and economic lopsidedness that relegates women to the background in the social ladder.

Speaking at the recently in Benin city during the 6th LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award, Ehigiamusoe lamented that cultural practices in many African countries have often rendered women invisible and subservient to their male counterparts.

Ehigiamusoe who decried the difficulty faced by women to participate in political and economic activities in a bid to live a comfortable and productive life said, “the average Nigerian woman is challenged with issues of violence, disinheritance, forced marriage, wife inheritance, harsh widowhood practices, sexual harassment, rape and human trafficking among others.”

Represented by Member Board of LAPO, Eddy Aghimien, said women engagement in the informal sector and farming which sustain the economy and society are unrecognized.

He added that: “Within this framework of impossibilities and limitations set by social structures and cultures, women have created personal lives worth emulating and are emerging as influential forces in their chosen careers, with keen interest in leadership and decision making.”

Reeling some achievement of LAPO in contributing to the advancement of women, Ehigiamusoe noted that, “the organization has witnessed women with poor socio-economic and health status transform to highly motivated women with more control over their lives, and those of their children while contributing their quota to national growth and development.”
