Igbinedion varsity gets new Pro-Chancellor

THE board of regents of Igbinedion University, Okada, has appointed Emeritus Professor Ebenezer Oluwole Akande as the institution’s new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council.

Currently Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ibadan, Akande who was born on June 25, 1938, had his secondary education in Christ School, Ado-Ekiti (1952-56) and Kings College, Lagos (1957-1958), while his tertiary education was undertaken at the then University College, Ibadan, Nigeria which was in a special relationship with the University of London, UK (1959-1964). Emeritus Professor Akande obtained MBBS degree of the University of London in 1964.

Following his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in various hospitals in the United Kingdom, he obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the United Kingdom in 1969.

He thereafter proceeded to the University of Oxford, where he obtained the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Reproductive Endocrinology in 1972. On return from Oxford, he was appointed Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Ibadan and was subsequently promoted a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1975.

He was Visiting Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology MacMaster University Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and the Monsah University, Clayton, Australia in 1984/85.

Subsequently, Emeritus Professor Akande worked at the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland from 1992 until retirement in 2000 directing WHO’s Reproductive Health Research and Strengthening Capacities of Institution in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Various posts he held in the past include; First Chief Medical Director of University College Hospital, Ibadan, Foundation Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, President of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association Worldwide 2004-2008, immediate Past Chairman, Committee of Board Chairmen, Federal University Technology Hospitals (2010-2011) and immediate Past Chairman, Board of Management, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (March 2009 – October 2011), emeritus Professor Akande was conferred with the Nigerian National Honour of, ‘‘Officer of Order of the Niger” (OON) in recognition of his distinguished contribution to Medical Education and Health Services, especially Reproductive Health in Nigeria and internationally In December 2003.

Akande is married to Professor (Mrs.) Modupe Akande and they are blessed with four children.
