ADOPTION of the culture of risk management has been described as a means of ensuring the safety of lives and property.
Lagos State Head of Service (HoS), Mrs. Folashade Jaji, while speaking at the 2015 Membership Induction/Conferment of Fellows and Patrons Ceremony of the Chartered Institute of Loan and Risk Management of Nigeria (CILRM) in Lagos, commended Lagosians and Nigerians in general for remitting their taxes to the government.

While saying that the citizens stand to gain a lot by paying their taxes, as roads, school, hospitals are built and maintained with payers’ money, Jaji, who is also a fellow of the institute, berated tax evaders. According to her, “ they are taking a very big risk” by not paying their taxes.

The HoS, who commended the state government for the judicious use of taxpayers’ money, urged the people to learn how to manage risks very well, as better management of risks in the society will make thing easy and human beings will be able to live longer.

Speaking at the event, President/Chairman of Governing Board of the CILRM, Dr. Oladipo Abiodun Bailey, said the institute, among others, aims to fill the void in the professionalism of loan and risk management practice and to instill discipline, integrity, responsibility, ethics, accountability, transparency and best practices and fairness in the disciplines of the profession.

Jaji, while enjoining non-members of the institute to join the CILRM, said people stand to gain a lot as what they learn will be applicable in managing risks at the various strata of the society. She commended the current administration for the various restructuring works being done in various areas in the state, adding that the more people learn about risk management, the better things will be managed.

Bailey, who however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption, condemned the idea of people spending above their income.

He said things that people buy which they are unable to account for, are simply got with stolen funds.

While enjoining all and sundry to join the president in the fight against corruption, he said the induction has shown that CILRM is acceptable by all Nigerians and the members will use the knowledge they gain to develop other areas of the society.

The HoS congratulated the members for the induction, saying that they are now seen as able to effectively manage risks in all spheres of life.

The CILRM is the sole professional body authorized by the government to regulate and control the practice of the profession in Nigeria. The evolving and highly competitive global economic scenario with its demand for top flight efficiency and effectiveness, have made it essential for specialist professional focus in loan and risk management, hence the CILRM.
