The Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari has said that civil servants were frustrating efforts to sanitise local government system in the state.

He stated this during a dinner organised to mark the Workers Day celebration in the state.

Masari said the wage bill of local government workers keeps increasing despite recent screening and on-the-spot payment for the workers.

He lamented that some clerks, messengers and other cadre of staff not entitled to collect the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) were still doing so.

He said to address the situation salaries of local government workers would be decentralised so that those drawing illegal entitlements would be checked.

He added that 27 of the 34 council areas stood the risk of collapsing if they were allowed to stand on their own, even as he called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to work at reducing ghost workers.

The NLC Chairman in the state, Comrade Tanimu Lawal called on government to pay verified persons waiting for their pensions and wrongly placed persons collecting CONHESS.

Tanimu however, commended the removal of discrimination between Higher National Diploma (HND) and Degree holders in the state, as well as allocation of land for low cost houses for civil servants.

He assured of workers’ determination to support the government on the successful implementation of its policies and programmes.
