To achieve meaningful sustainable economic growth, Nigeria must begin to aggressively develop its human capital resources, especially in the public service.

This was the view of human resources professionals from public and private sectors at the induction ceremony of 103 members into the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM).

They submitted that an impressive performance of the economy of most developed and newly industrialised countries was as a result of their commitment to the development of their human resources.

Speaking, CIPM President, Udom Inoyo, urged the inductees to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession and contribute to national growth.Inoyo said the institute was working on data to come out with a model that would help create a vibrant Human Resource department in the private and public sectors to achieve meaningful growth that will help harness Nigeria’s greatest assets.

He called on the inductees to be guided by the ethics of the profession as part of measures to be successful and overcome challenges associated with business operations, corporate institutions, as well as social and economic environment of work.

“How much success we achieve in driving national development will depend on how seriously the professionals take this challenge of all time and how much vision we display in harnessing the most important gift of this country,” he said.

He charged the inductee to raise the bar for the institute, saying, “As members of this professional body, my counsel to you is to leverage best practice, deploy your HRM competencies and your knowledge of the business effectively to raise the quality of your contributions to organisational performance and corporate success, thereby contributing to the growth of the profession and the Nigerian economy.”

Besides, in addition to the professional certificate, the inductees were also awarded the Human Resource Practitioner’s License (HRPL), which permits them to operate as HR professional in the country, which will be reviewed every three years.

Executive Director, Mobil Producing Nigeria, Paul Dieffenthaller, in his paper titled: Harnessing People Power in Organisations, noted that achieving an optimum labour turnover was fundamental to maintaining organisational performance, but harnessing the employees abilities was key.
