Abia State Public Servants who have five years before retirement have been exempted from Contributory Pension Scheme. The state Head of Service, Dr. Vivian Uma, disclosed this at the meeting with the state Contributory Pension Scheme Implementation Committee.

He said labour unions in the state were expected to educate the state workers through enlightenment programme about the law tagged: “Abia State Pensions Reform Law No. 4 of 2017.”

He added that the era of owing retirees their pensions was gone hence he commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, the state lawmakers, National Pension Commission (PenCom), labour unions in the state and other stakeholders for their roles in putting the scheme together.

Head of PenCom in the South-East Region, Mike Ene, who described the state new pension scheme as the best in the country, said it would not only guarantee the desired future for public servants, but would eliminate ghost workers and pensioners. He urged the state government to rise up to the challenge of fighting the cabals behind the ghost workers and pensioners syndrome who may still ensure that they sabotage the implementation of the new Scheme.
