AFCON 2023: Sad night as Nigeria fail to win fourth title

The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed in their bid to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday night after losing 2-1 to the host nation, Ivory Coast.

Nigeria’s quest to win the AFCON trophy for the first time since winning the competition back in 2013 started on a good note courtesy of a goal from captain fantastic, William Troost-Ekong.

Troost-Ekong put the Super Eagles 1-0 ahead as the central defender almost ripped the net apart with a bullet header from a corner kick in the 38th minute.

Franck Kessie of Ivory Coast celebrates with his team mates after scoring his goal during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations final match between Nigeria and Ivory Coast at Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe on February 11, 2024 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The Elephants who dominated the possession in the first half of the game, however, got their equaliser through Franck Kessie in the 62nd minute with an assist from Simon Adingra.

Ivory Coast were not done and didn’t even want to take the game into extra time as Borussia Dortmund striker, Sebastian Haller, scored their second goal in the 81st minute courtesy of another assist from Adingra.

The Super Eagles huffed and puffed to score an equaliser to at least push the game into extra time but all their efforts were in vain as Ivory Coast won 2-1 to match Nigeria’s three AFCON titles.
