The Acropolis Golf Resort will play a prominent role in ensuring that golf becomes one of the biggest sports in the Southeast region, the Resort’s Acting Manager, Obioma Ogakwu, has said.

The new golf facility will be launched on April 6with some of the country’s top players on hand to participate in a maiden championship, which would also draw prominent Nigerians to the resort located in Ihiala, Anambra State.

Ogakwusaid the project has sparked new interest in the game in the region., with many players from the region angling to be part of the opening day’s competition.

“While we have always known that the Enugu, Ebonyi and Aba golf clubsare the major golf facilities in the region, the Acropolis project will increase the option golfers in the region have to recreate,” she said.

Ogakwu said: “We plan to exert ourselves beyond the recreational value inherent in this. Our plan for Acropolis is to be a major hub for the game and also form a critical developmental centre for golfing talents in the Southeast.”

She said the design of the golf course has the latitude for future modification that will allow it to become a championship course, adding, “That is why we are working with the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria.”

Mike Ubi, a professional golfer who consults on the project, affirms that the present nine-hole payout of par 36 already sets the course off as a brilliant facility that golfers would love to return to.

“I think the launch of Acropolis Golf Course on April 6 will open offers to a new experience. I have been involved with the recent phase of this project and made brilliant tweaks that make playing here very interesting. I am also aware of plans, which we have made provision for, and I can say Acropolis will be a major factor for golf development here.”

The top 15 professional golfers in the country have been invited to be part of the opening ceremony, which starts on April 5, 2024.
